Inflammations cause many diseases in the human body. “Simple inflammations” that are mistreated or neglected can develop into complex diseases with time. Mouth hygiene is fundamental for both prevention and treatment of gum infection. We know that bad breath can be directly related to poor gum hygiene. Gingivitis one of the most common problems, and can appear in pregnancy. Another common problem that dentists are facing is gingivitis in children.

Types of gum disease by symptoms

People often take it lightly, thinking that a bit of blood while brushing is not a big deal. However, this could not be farther from the truth. That small amount of blood could signify the beginning of a dangerous disease that can make your life miserable, deprive you of thousands of dollars and even cost you your teeth.

There are numerous of variations for this problem but their symptoms often overlap and are interlinked. Typically, you can be assume you might have gum diseases if you have abnormally red and swollen gums that are tender to touch and bleed when eating or brushing. And not only are the symptoms interlinked, but all too often, the cause of most diseases can be traced to one source: inadequate oral health.

One of the most common is gingivitis which displays these symptoms. It occurs due to the increase in bacteria in the mouth, which in turn produce a number of digestive enzymes and toxins as part of their living processes. These enzymes and toxins attack the gums, causing them to swell and develop a deep red or purple hue.  However, gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease and can be eradicated at home simply by employing good oral hygiene habits such as regularly brushing and flossing. Brushing and flossing remove any plaque that builds up in the areas between the teeth, which provides a foundation for bacteria colonies, so by removing the source of the toxins and enzymes, you can get rid of gingivitis.

Treatment and oral health

However, should you choose to ignore gingivitis, it can exacerbate to a condition called periodontitis. In periodontitis, gums slowly start to pull away from the teeth forming spaces called pockets. These pockets are highly susceptible to infections and cause the bacteria to populate below the gum line. Once there, they start to produce the same toxins and enzymes that cause gingivitis, only this time these affect the much more important connective tissues and bones that hold the teeth in their place. Over time, if the disease is not treated properly, the supporting structures below this line slowly corrode away, causing the teeth to loosen and eventually fall out. In the case of periodontitis, you have little choice other than to visit a dentist if want to counteract the effects of the disease. Typical treatments include thorough cleaning of the teeth and below the gum lines, as well as adopting the use of special tooth pastes and mouthwashes. However, both gingivitis and the periodontitis that follows are preventable diseases that can be easily avoided through good dental hygiene habits that neutralize the bacteria in the mouth.

A less obvious gum disease is gum recession, where the soft gum tissue slowly starts to shrink away, exposing the roots of the teeth. It can even cause teeth to fall out when there is not enough supporting tissue. The cause for gum recession can be varied from inheriting weak gum structure to inadequate dental care. Treatment can be painful and time consuming, especially when surgery is involved.

So the next time you  notice any blood in your mouth, do not simply ignore it and contact a dentist to ensure you are not suffering from a dangerous gum disease. Better still, make sure you avoid such a situation in the first place by practicing good dental hygiene habits that can help ensure that your teeth do not give out on you before life does.
