Teeth and gum care benefits

All responsible parents make it their job to ensure that their child develops good habits from a young age. For example, my parents forced me to brush my teeth twice a day from the day my first tooth peeked from the gum. However, probably due to a lack of knowledge about oral health care, they never emphasized on other equally important practices such as flossing and exercising the gums. Needless to say, they are not alone, as many parents do not realize that oral health care is not limited to brushing alone.

However, that does not mean that brushing is any less important. Brushing helps to remove the any plaque that has gathered on the surface as well as stray pieces of food that might provide a breeding ground for bacteria. Flossing is also equally important, removing plaque and decomposing food from the gaps between the teeth where the tooth brush can not reach. This not only helps prevent tooth decay but also various gum diseases that can grow serious over time and even lead to teeth falling out.

Regular oral care can yield many benefits in life. Firstly, it helps to build your confidence. A clean mouth is devoid of bad breath and yellow teeth, leading to dazzling smile and positive attitude when talking to people. Indeed, bad breath is one of the most embarrassing problems that can lead to many awkward situations. Hence, it is important to maintain good oral health by not only brushing and flossing, but also cleaning the tongue thoroughly to remove the white layer of bacteria that can accumulate over it, which in turn leads to bad breath.

Another more relevant advantage of maintaining good oral health practices is that it prevents diseases. Not only diseases of the mouth, but also a number of diseases related to the rest of the body. In fact, medical scientists report a relationship between gum diseases and other conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Gum diseases are quite painful on their own and can lead to teeth falling out. A buildup of bacteria in the mouth can also reach the rest of the digestive system, leading to infections and other complications. Furthermore, maintaining good oral health habit can help decreases the chances of catching infections such as influenza and sore throats.

In most of world, particularly the third world countries, dental care is very expensive. By ensuring that we maintain good oral health practices, we can ensure that we do not rack up a large bill beyond regular checkups. Compared to expensive, not to mention painful dental procedures such as root canals, preventive measures such as brushing with the correct technique and changing the tooth brush every three months can be quite cheap.

So in short, maintaining good oral health can help you stay healthy as it is beneficial not only for your mouth, but also the rest of your body, helping to decrease the frequency of catching diseases. Then there are the added advantages of saving money that would otherwise be spent on expensive and painful dental procedures as well as helping you maintain your confidence. So by just spending some time daily on maintaining your oral health, you can add years to your life.
